Making your performance review a success

1. Ask questions – you should keep up the questions and press for details
2. Tell your story – if you disagree with our boss’ assessment of your performance, ask if you can tell your side of the story.
3. Play it by ear – it’s generally a good idea to discuss your future with your boss at your review. But if you’re overwhelmed by criticism of your performance, it may be better to save that for another day.
4. Don’t sweat the small stuff – you don’t have to explain or discuss every minor improvement your boss thinks you could make
5. Follow up - if you are surprised by a negative review and want some time to reflect before discussing it, ask your boss for more time. Your boss expects it. It’s better to say you want more time to think about everything that was discussed during the meting
   

However, if your rapport with your boss is great and you have managed your career and boss right, then you’ll not have any surprises at the meeting. It will just be a continuation of your earlier conversation regarding the expectations both of you have of your position , how you’re doing, and what you’re supposed to do in order to meet those expectations, etc.It makes sense to list your accomplishments, making them as quantifiable as period, say a year. You could send both lists to your boss prior to the assessment meeting. It is also wise to send him weekly updates, so that if you miss out on sending him those lists, he knows what’s going on and what to expect.

You should also ask yourself the question: why is your career important to you?

• It pays all your bills. Without it, you couldn’t survive.
• It is the source of your investments – retirement, college for your kids, and so on.
• It helps you acquire other big assets like your home and cars.
• It is the source of everything you have financially – the source of your net worth. For example, even if you want to save by spending less, you must have enough to meet all your requirements and then save enough. You will agree that even if you are a miser, you won’t be able to save anything if you don’t have a reasonable income.

There were four graduates who got jobs, each paying them Rs 1 lakh annually. The first did not do too well, and got a hike of only 3 percent . the second who did slightly better got a hike of 5 percent. The third who did pretty well managed a hike of 7 percent , while the forth did an excellent job and managed a 10 percent hike.

Don’t go by these percentages. They might seem small. Believe me, even a 2 percent rise makes a lot of difference in terms of actual money. So you see, you need to work really hard at what you do to make that difference in our output, so that the input rises proportionately.
